Seminar
Series Sponsored by the Office of University-Community Partnerships,
the Theory Practice Learning Program, and the Center for Teaching
and Curriculum
Over the last decade many faculty members at Emory
have developed innovative
opportunities for undergraduates to observe, experience, and
contribute to
real-world projects and practices in a variety of community
organizations
around Atlanta and then relate those activities to their courses
and majors
in ways that enhance both the real-world practice and the learning
process.
In this series of three seminars we will explore how Emory might
more
effectively provide a clear sequence of experiential learning
for a larger
number of students: first through introductory experience and
observation,
then through more active and sustained engagement, and finally
through
theoretically framed academic projects that are also firmly
grounded in
practice.
First Things First: Introductory Experiences
Tuesday, September 13
This seminar will present the concept of sequencing and then
explore the
first of the three levels: introductory experience and observation.
Dana
White (ILA) and Vialla Hartfield-Méndez (Spanish) will
discuss how they have
integrated theory and practice in their courses through site
visits, field
work, cultural events, and other means. After comments from
the panel, there
will be time for other participants to ask questions and discuss
their own
ideas and plans for experiential learning.
